Seyval blanc - old resistant variety

Origin:

This interspecific cross was bred over 100 years ago, in 1919, on the Seyve-Villard farm in France (Bertile Seyve and Victor Villard).

Cross:  Seibel 5656 × Seibel 4986 (Rayon d'Or)

Synonyms:

Seyve-Villard 5276, SV 5276,

Requirements to the site:

Seyval blanc should not bet planted in too late vineyards. It's ripening is not

Due to the relatively early ripening and good frost resistance, the demands on the location are low. They are therefore often grown in more northerly wine-growing regions.

Spread:

Seyval blanc was somewhat widespread in France in the post-war years (> 1000 ha). However, this area declined significantly when hybrid vines were outlawed.

At present, it is mainly cultivated in England and Poland. The variety's popularity in these regions, particularly for the production of sparkling base wines, is attributable to its early ripening and high yield.

Specials:

Seyval blanc exhibits excellent resistance against Downy Mildew and notable resistance against Powdery Mildew, typically requiring minimal treatment.

Budding is slightly delayed, while ripening is relatively early. The grapes of Seyval blanc vines can become somewhat compact, which can occasionally lead to botrytis development.

Due to these advantageous characteristics, Seyval blanc is a contributing parent in the genetic lineage of numerous contemporary fungus-resistant grape varieties, including Souvignier gris, Birstaler Muskat, Calardis blanc and Calardis musqué.

Wine style:

The wines are predominantly light and neutral in character.

Resistance loci:

Powdery Mildew: Ren3, Ren9
Downey Mildew: Rpv3.2, Rpv3.3
