Rondo

Origin:

Rondo was bred in 1964 in what was then Czechoslovakia by Professor V. Kraus.

Cross: Zarya Severa × St. Laurent

Synonyms:

Rondo was initially listed under the breeding number GM 6494-5.

Requirements to the vineyard site:

The location requirements are relatively low. Rondo ripens very early, even before Müller-Thurgau.

Here in Baden, it ripens in the second half of August.

Spread:

Due to its early ripening, it is mainly cultivated in northern Europe (Denmark, Sweden, Great Britain, Ireland, Netherlands).

Specials:

Rondo is a fungus-resistant grape variety, which means that, depending on the weather, it only needs to be sprayed 2-3 times a year. Its resistance to downy mildew in particular is good to very good.

Due to crossbreeding with Vitis amurensis, Rondo has very good winter frost resistance but also buds early.

Rondo usually produces deep, dark, colour-intensive red wines with aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, elderberry and sometimes light spice and herb notes. The tannins are usually moderate with a fresh acidity.

The grapes are usually medium-sized with large, dark blue, round berries.

Clones:

1 Gm, 10 Gm, 37 Gm, 39 Gm, 45 Gm and 47 Gm
